3 Reasons You’re Not Making Progress During Therapy
You’ve been to a few therapy sessions, but you’re not seeing any progress at all. While therapy can take time to make significant changes in your life, it shouldn’t take so long for you to make any progress at all.
Here at KMA Therapy, we know that when you're going to therapy sessions, you want to make sure you're actually getting something out of the time, the money and the energy that you're putting into them. We’re here to help you learn how to make the most out of your therapy sessions and see the kind of meaningful changes you desire.
After reading this article, you’ll know the top three reasons why you might not be seeing the kind of progress you want when you're going to therapy.
3 Reasons You Aren’t Making Progress During Therapy
Here are three common reasons why you aren’t making progress during your therapy sessions.
1. You’re not seeing the right therapist
Number one is that you're not seeing the right therapist. Finding the right therapist can sometimes feel like dating in the sense that you have to kind of go on a few and explore your options before you find the person who's going to be the best match for you.
If you feel like your therapist is someone who doesn't really get you or you're just kind of uncomfortable around them, you're really not going to be able to feel comfortable enough to open up and make the kind of progress you want to see during sessions.
Solution: Find a new therapist! It's okay to try out a few different therapists until you know you've found someone you can feel comfortable with. For more tips, watch this video on how to break up with your therapist and find someone better:
2. You aren’t doing your homework
Number two is that you need to be doing your homework in between sessions if you want to continue to see progress.
A lot of the time it is easy to feel engaged and invigorated when you're actually in session and you feel really motivated to do the work, but when you get out of your sessions and you have a week or two weeks in between them, sometimes it's harder to stay on track and do the exercises and activities that your therapist asks you to do.
This is totally understandable, but if you actually want to see real changes in your daily life, you actually have to make changes in your daily life.
Solution: Ask your therapist for help! Don't ever feel like you need to lie to your therapist. If their homework isn't working for you, let them know - they'll work with you to find different solutions and strategies to make progress between your therapy sessions.
3. You aren’t being honest with your therapist
Number three is that you're just not being honest. During your therapy sessions, it can feel easy to just kind of want to stay closed off from certain parts of your life because you feel like you're going to be shamed or you might be judged.
But a therapist can't help you with a problem that they don't know you're facing.
Solution: Explore the reasons why you're holding back from your therapist. If you feel comfortable with your therapist, the problem might be therapy itself - which isn't a bad thing! You hear a lot of mixed messaging about therapy from friends, family, and even in your favourite shows and movies.
